Bornhorst Woods

Bornhorst Woods, a gracious gift to the citizens of Shelby County

Ralph and Madeline Bornhorst donated Bornhorst Woods to the Shelby County Park District in 1995. This 10 acre woods is currently the only piece of property to be owned by the Shelby County Park District. The park was developed with the help of area Boy Scouts working on Eagle Scout projects.

The loop trail features interpretive signs to help you identify trees, as well as, identify habitats and the creatures that live there. There is an observation blind for watching wildlife and benches along the trail to sit and rest awhile.

Bornhorst Woods offers a great deal of diversity due to the many types of habitat that surround the park. The Woods is wet in the spring filling with vernal pools that offer a place for salamanders, frogs and toads to lay their eggs. With farm fields on three sides it makes for a favorite place for deer to rest. The button bush swamp to the rear of the park offers a home to wood ducks and other wetland creatures. Bornhorst Woods is the perfect place for a quiet walk or a family picnic.

Directions to Bornhorst Woods:
Take I-75 to State Route 119 and turn west. Proceed to Staley Road. Turn north on Staley Road. Bornhorst Woods is 3/10 mile past Wells Rd. on the west side.
